"I have long believed that the modern world is so complicated and difficult that there is sufficient challenge for the artist in simply trying to represent it honestly and truly. While I have no argument with abstraction, I find it insufficient to capture the complexity of the world around us. The same is true with political art: whenever art tries to make a point it becomes propaganda and stops being art. Thus, it loses its higher calling. Moreover, when creating political art, how can we be sure we are truly on the side of the angels? Millions of canvases have been covered with political paintings in support of the greatest cruelties and inhumanities...all done by artists, some of them truly great artists, who thought their cause was just. In the end, then, the only proper course is the aesthetic one — to paint what I see without judgement, and with all the skill I can muster."
